Over the past three decades, the face of education in Saudi Arabia has transformed from a traditional system to a modern and innovative one. Understanding the importance of education and how it can drive a country’s economic and social development, the Saudi government has been making significant investments in modernising the education sector.
In 2016, the government, under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, introduced the Vision 2030, which set out a comprehensive strategy for modernising the education sector and preparing young minds for the future.
The plan focused on inclusion of STEM education, in the curriculum for students at all levels. STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy and enables the next generation of innovators. Innovation can further allow to create new products and processes that sustain our economy. Thus, inclusivity of STEM subjects was deemed to be of great importance. The Saudi government is even developing partnerships with leading universities and institutions around the world.
Even now, the government in investing heavily in the education sector, building new schools and universities, introducing new programmes and providing training for teachers. All things considered, the focus is on shifting from traditional studies to a more comprehensive education that covers a broad range of subjects, including science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Introduction of smart boards and other digital tools is also allowing in enhancing the learning experience for the students.
The students of today, are the future of tomorrow, and the future is completely weaved with digitization and innovation. No longer, the traditional methods of education can provide such skills and abilities to the students. Hence, to meet the current and upcoming demands of the global job market, investing in STEM subjects is of utmost importance.
Since the introduction of Vision 2030, many reforms have already been introduced, which, as a result, has led to increased enrolment and graduation rates, particularly in STEM subjects. The number of students pursuing degrees in these subjects has also increased significantly, and many young people are now entering careers in fields such as technology and engineering. This has helped to drive economic growth and innovation in the country, creating new opportunities and helping to position Saudi Arabia as a leader in the region. With high number of students enrolling now, with an expectation of such number to grow significantly over the years, the government will need to invest in new educational facilities and resources to ensure that students have access to high-quality education.
Presently, the face of education in Saudi Arabia is shaping up to be an exciting and transformative period, with the potential to have a major impact on the country’s economy and society. With more investment and commitment, we can truly ensure that Saudi Arabia will become a leading player in the global education landscape.
